PHARA Celebrates 50th Year of Empowering Independence for Every-Body
NORTH BAY - For fifty years, individuals and families in North Bay and the surrounding communities have been sleeping, eating, and living a little better, thanks to the services of the non-profit charitable organization known simply as PHARA (Physically Handicapped Adults’ Rehabilitation Association). PHARA provides services in both official languages to people with disabilities, as well as housing opportunities for those with low or moderate incomes.
Focused on independence and housing, PHARA has a strong history of delivering best-in-class health care services. “With 97% of clients recommending our services it is great to be part of such a great team of people at PHARA. It is the people who have ensured the success of the organization for the past 50 years,” said Mike Van der Vlist, PHARA CEO. “Every day our team from the front-line care staff, through administration, to our Board of Directors are working hard to provide outstanding personal support services, rehabilitation services, and housing.”
Every year, PHARA provides more than 49,000 days of housing for individuals, couples, and families in North Bay. “It’s about more than just housing. It’s about being here for 50 years, and being an excellent community partner that people can trust,” said Matt Duquette, Board Chair. “We help individuals stay independent through services such as our Attendant Outreach Program, Assisted Living Programs, Assistive Devices Program, and Post Stroke Rehabilitation Program.”
PHARA started back in 1975 and in 50 years the organization has grown and changed considerably over the years. This has been accomplished by partnering with the communities we serve, partnering with Ontario Health, the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, and a wide variety of other agencies to bring new opportunities to the community. Some recent activities at PHARA include the EmployEASE Program shared with YES Employment and sharing in the Keeping Seniors Warm Program last Holiday Season with United Way.
Governance for PHARA is provided by a volunteer Board of Directors who provide strategic guidance, oversight, and direction. Over the years, the board has featured a wide selection of people with unique and diverse backgrounds, each bringing their own lens and voice to the organization. “We rely on a strong volunteer board, as each person brings their unique lived experience to the table,” said Matt Duquette, PHARA Board Chair.” The role requires about 3 hours of time a month, so it’s a manageable and important commitment.”
When asked about the plans to celebrate the PHARA’s 50th year, Van der Vlist said, “We will be sharing a lot of stories and accomplishments with the community in the coming months. We will be recognizing our staff in different ways over the year, because they are key to our success. Most importantly, we want everyone to know that we will always be there for our clients, tenants, staff, volunteers, and the community. PHARA is for Today. PHARA is for Tomorrow. PHARA is Forever.” said Van der Vlist. “We want to grow, expand, and work with groups, public and private, across all sectors. Together, we can dare to dream that one day, everybody will have a full life, an independent life, a good life.”
PHARA is inviting parties who wish to dare the same dream to become involved with the organization. For more information, please visit their website at www.phara.org.
